Our Mayoral Candidate

Mayoral Candidate

Jonathan Cassell

About me

I am a current Councillor with the City of Coffs harbour and have a strong track record for delivering outcomes. I have succeed in every motion I raised however some motions needed collaborative support with my fellow Councillors to see a motion carried but many carried unanimously. I sat on 5 City committees and did my best to attend each one throughout the term. I was appointed Chair of the Koala Plan of Management Committee, Cultural Advisory Committee and the Sustainability Advisory Committee and believe I filled my roll in these committee to the best of my ability. I have enjoyed my time as a Councillor and look forward to another term hopefully as Mayor.

I am running for the Mayor of Coffs Harbour to better the outcomes of all who live here with a particular focus on ‘Future-proofing’ Coffs Harbour. I am committed to creating job opportunities, beautifying Coffs Harbour, keeping the Jetty in public hands and preserving our natural environment.

We need a leader in Council who will deliver sustainability outcomes.

Vision

Where will Coffs Harbour be in 50 years? What will be the health of our environment? How about planning for a 130, 000+ population? How will we maintain and service our financial responsibilities? These are questions that I consider critical as a City leader and are essential if we consider that the climate is predicted to be dramatically hotter than it is today. It took 50 years for Coffs to get a proper art Gallery, so ‘future-proofing’ our region should be a priority today!

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

3 WAYS COUNCIL CAN MAKE HOUSING CHEAPER

INCLUSIONARY ZONING

Council can make houses cheaper by working with developers to provision for lot sizes that are specifically tailored to low-income persons. The people who often have the greatest need are sidelined by economic decisions. We should, then, be planning for people and not profits. The Coffs Harbour Greens want to see more people own their own homes at affordable rates so they can grow a garden, live comfortably or raise their family safely. Please read our housing submission here!

LOW-INCOME AND STUDENT ACCOMODATION

We welcome the building of more accommodation reserved for students and low-income earners. These could be council zoned reserves which could improve the liveability and equity in our city. These, we believe, could provide areas where millennials or women over 55 could access designated and affordable accommodation helping them remain in the area.

CRISIS ACCOMODATION AND VAN TOURISTS

The first place someone may resort to living is in their car if they are confronted with domestic violence or rental eviction. Council could allow people to live in their cars or vans in a safe environment with sanitation infrastructure available. This can have many benefits from supporting people as they look for new or temporary accommodation. It also can alleviate conflict between tourists and locals when people traveling in their van stay in our region. This moveable dwelling accommodation would be inexpensive, secure and actively managed to the highest standards.
